= 대회 이야기 =
* [[잉글랜드]]가 처음 <del>이자 지금까지는 마지막</del>으로 우승한 월드컵 대회이다. 지난 [[1934년 이탈리아 월드컵]] 이후 사상 세번째로 개최국이 우승을 차지한셈. 이후 월드컵 사상 '개최국=우승국' 사례는 74년 서독과 78년 아르헨티나, 98년의 프랑스까지 총 3차례 더 나왔다.
 
* 사상 처음으로 월드컵에 출전한 [[북한]]은 [[이탈리아]]를 꺾고 8강 진출을 이뤄내 화제를 모았다. 당시 아시아 국가로는 처음으로 사상 첫 승리이자 조별예선 통과, 8강 진출이라는 기록을 세웠으며 당시 북한과 체제 경쟁을 벌이고 있던 [[대한민국]]을 당혹케했다. 그 결과 한국 정부는 [[양지 축구단]]을 창단하는등 국가적으로 스포츠 진흥에 박차를 가하게 된다.
